Influences

Influences

Fargo (1996) Dir. Joel and Ethan Coen

As we want to create a character based film, the relationship of the characters is essential to the piece, even more so that we want to create an element of comedy through this. Fargo is the perfect example of what we intend to create, with Carl and Gaear, played by Steve Buscemi and Peter Stormare finding comic element in the most sinister of scenarios. We intend to use this as a basis to write the script.
The entire scenario of a kidnapping gone wrong roots to this film very closely, as we watch the dramatic events unfold in a black comedy style. I almost want into to play in a similar fashion in our film, we begin with a what we believe to be a Thriller which slowly transcends into a black comedy, almost creating two films in one. I am aware of how hard it will be to create something like this but it creates a challenge for us as film-makers to excel our ambitions.

The two kidnap characters and how they are developed are going to be vital for the story of our film. In this film although they do establish a comical element, I still find a lot of their scene's to be; aggressive, bloody and violent. Far exceeding what we are going for. I think our own characters will be lighter in comparison to the above characters but it is not to say that I have not drawn influence from this film. I would say my main inspiration is the bewilderment to how they deal with the situation, for as far as the story progresses we deem how the characters are completely out of their depth. It is how they deal with their predicament and the continuous second guessing which is something I feel we would be able to execute in my film.

I also like the Coen brothers films in general. They seem to really get across an environment or setting and the make the audience engrossed in, and aware of the surroundings, which helps the audience get a better feel for their films. I will try to replicate in my film.

Blocking and Rough Script Reading

Blocking and rough Script Reading

In todays session we had Sheffield Hallam actors to read our script back to us to see what needs editing and what needs to be scraped completely.

We have created 2 rough scripts, one is very dialogue heavy, but both included bits of quality that we can forge to create the final draft.

The actors loved our script and even offered to be in our film, but we envisioned the characters to be much older.

It was very helpful and the piece started to come together more clearly in our heads. Hearing it out load helped us decided which bits we should take from both scrips to create the final one.

Blocking Practice

The Last Tycoon (1979)

We took a 60 second clip from The Last Tycoon and used the script and an actor to
film the scene in the quickest amount of time using blocking.

This help me understand the pressure of filming in a specific time and help me use the camera
to create a sense of space for the audience.

Pitch Feedback

Pitch Feedback

The tutors liked our initial idea of using the historic civil war of Lancaster vs York for our Drama piece, and so the pitch went well overall. They liked our idea of not actual showing the victim getting kidnapped as it might be cheesy and thought it could look very visually appealing in a warehouse setting. They also liked the Black Comedy element to the piece and thought it could work well with the kidnap due we described.

The Pitch

War of the Roses

The Wars of the Roses was civil war between 1455 and 1487, and fought by members of the House of Lancaster and the House of York. Both houses were branches of the Plantagenet royal house, tracing their descent from King Edward III.
The White Rose was the symbol of the House York and the Red the symbol of Lancaster.
The Wars of the Roses ended with King Henry VII who started the Tudor dynasty and symbolically united the White and Red Roses to create the Tudor Rose.

Basic Plot
A florist in Lancaster and a florist in York are the top two florists in England. The florist of York has just employed a new young male staff member, who convinces the older current male shop owner to do something about being second best. They decide to Kidnap the son of the owner of the Lancaster florist and make them bankrupt through the ransom. There is a case of mistaken identity and they end up kidnapping the wrong person.

Characters
Kidnapper 1-  (Male) House York
  Age: 50
  Personality: Nervous, inept, paranoid.
Physical Appearance: Overweight, small-medium height, going bald/bald.
Additional Info: His character changes from the beginning as he starts to break under the pressure of the kidnapping gone wrong.
  Inspiration From: In Bruges
Kidnapper 2-  (Male) House York
  Age: 20
Personality: Aggressive, ambitious, sadistic, creepy, eerie.
  Physical Appearance: Underweight, tall-medium height
Additional Info: Even though his character is quite menacing he never actually                        conducts any physical violence towards the victim.
Inspiration From: Fargo and Funny Games (US)
Victim-    (Male) N/A
  Age: 30
  Personality: N/A
Physical Appearance: Overweight-pot belly, small height.
Additional Info: This character’s face is never seen and his identity is never revealed. This character is mistaken by the new employee Kidnapper 2, for the son of the rival florist in Lancaster.
  Inspiration From: N/A

Actors
We will write a basic script as soon as possible and then start to begin to look for actors, as we feel finding the right actors will be crucial for our character intentions and the project as a whole.
Methods we will use for casting:
•The StarNow website.
•Acting schools around Sheffield.
•Local Acting Workshops.

Location
1.Warehouse (Inside)
2.Warehouse (Outside)
3. A Florist
The main location will be inside a Warehouse type building, which is crucial as it will be used for the majority of the film-Low key light and natural light, gritty.
The second location will only be needed if the outside of location 1 isn’t sufficient. It will be used for the opening shot as Kidnapper 1 turns up in the car and enters the warehouse.
This will be the York Florist but the actual location obviously doesn’t need to be located in York. This will be included in a flash back or will just be a shot that links with the dialogue.

Style/Influence
•The first half of the film is conventional kidnapping in a thriller/horror-(Dark)
•As the plot unravels and they find out they have kidnapped the wrong guy, the film slides into a character based Dark Comedy (Comedy comes from ineptitude of the kidnappers).
•Similar film styles we would like to replicate are Fargo and In Bruges.

Equipment

•2x Cameras-DSLR Canon 600D and a Nickon D800
•2x Tripods
•1x Gorilla pod
•1x Marantz
•1x Shot Gun Mic
•1x Boom pole
•Light kit and generator/portable LED depending on Location of Warehouse
•1x Tracks
•1x Reflector
